Music Therapy Curriculum Training Have you ever considered the way you see yourself is ultimately how others see you? Daily we experience life through funnels created by circumstances and decisions imposed by others. This association impacts what you HEAR, and how you HEAR the world around you. Can you hear me now started off as an experiment used to change negative thoughts my husband was experiencing about himself and the world around himself? Past traumas experienced in his childhood forced him to view life from a distorted perspective. He was tormented daily with words of self- doubt, generational baggage, a disbelief of his present and future life and hopelessness. Our marriage was in pandemonium on the threshold of a divorce. I believe we can all at some juncture during life’s journey agree with that statement. During a pivotal time in our marriage we agreed to complete the can you hear me now musical challenge created by Heather N. Henley. In this challenge, we agreed for thirty days to only listen to music that was considered up lifting or inspirational in content. As the instructor, I chose the songs we could listen to and daily we processed the events experienced throughout the day. The goal of this challenge was to alleviate anxiety and depression, increase self-perception and self-esteem, and improve coping skills and emotional skills, as well as to decrease aggressive behaviors. Musical experience as an interpersonal and intrapersonal process allows individuals to freely perceive, express, communicate, and change emotions nonverbally in an oppressive environment. Consequently, improving their communication ability and social support additionally increases empathy, leading to the reduction of external and internal problems, and the improvement of the quality of life.
